StopPicking.com

Description:

StopPicking.com is an interactive self-help program for self-injurious skin picking and nail biting. The program helps you to identify situations associated with your picking or biting behaviours and recommends strategies to help you change those behaviours. There are three modules in the program: 1) Assessment, which guides you through an extensive self-evaluation of your behaviour, requiring you to monitor your picking behaviour daily for up to 3 weeks; 2) Intervention, where the program will provide automated tailored feedback based on your assessment to help you implement interventions or coping strategies while still monitoring your behaviour; 3) Maintenance, which is designed to help you avoid relapses by continual monitoring of behaviour and setting goals for continued maintenance. The program requires about a 7-10 week commitment to complete the first 2 modules, but takes less than 15 minutes each day. Once you have reached the Maintenance module, you can remain there indefinitely, monitoring your urges and learning about relapse prevention. StopPicking.com keeps track of your progress and provides feedback in the form of graphs and charts about how you are progressing. Weekly goal setting is an integral part of the program.

Outcome Summary:

Results of an uncontrolled trial of StopPicking showed that the program resulted in significant reductions in the frequency of picking episodes and symptom severity ratings from baseline to post-intervention. The results also indicated that participants who used StopPicking.com for longer periods of time demonstrated greater reductions in frequency of picking episodes, but duration of program use was not associated with symptom severity scores.
