Parenting Strategies

Description:

The Parenting Strategies site is designed to encourage parents to adopt parenting practices thought to help prevent alcohol misuse among their adolescent offspring.  The site is based on the assumption that parents can have an important influence on adolescent drinking.

Initially, you are invited to complete a survey to assess your current knowledge and parenting practices. You are provided with immediate feedback based on your responses - and then able to complete any or all of the 13 available modules. Based on your responses to the survey, the site tailors the program to you by recommending specific modules for you. All modules are interactive, including practical tips, exercises, vignettes and end of module quizzes. Goal-setting exercises and audio clips from adolescents and lectures are also used. The modules cover the following topics: facts about adolescent drinking, developing good parent-child relationships and communication, being proactive in discussing alcohol with your child, modelling responsible alcohol-related attitudes and behaviour, establishing family rules, monitoring your adolescent, managing parent-adolescent conflict, hosting adolescent parties, guiding and coaching problem solving and decision making, strategies for helping adolescents manage peer pressure, managing situations involving adolescent alcohol misuse and mental health problems in adolescence.
