Description:

Alkoholhjalpen is a Swedish-language site that focuses on problem-drinking based on  Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Motivational Interviewing and using a solution-oriented focus. This program consists of 18 modules: risk situations, diary, consequences, progress rating scale, decisional balance, paths to change drinking, formulating goals, problem solving, new solutions, things that work alreaDSY, miracle question, friends and family, other support/treatment, alcohol refusal skills, coping with cravings, coping with thoughts, related problems, and relapse prevention. Modules contain psychoeducational texts, interactive exercises, and videos describing rationales for the exercises. Personalised recommendations are generated from questionnaires at the beginning of each module. Modules do not have to be completed in order, and users can skip modules as they see fit. Progress is tracked via a user-completed electronic diary, and there is an open forum on which users can interact with other users.

Outcome Summary:

A 2014 randomised-controlled trial compared Alkoholhjalpen with a brief feedback-based intervention (eScreen), and an assessment-only control. Intention to Treat analyses (including all participants who were randomised into the study) indicated no differences between any conditions. Per protocol analyses (including only those who accessed the interventions during the study, showed Alkoholhjalpen led to greater reductions in alcohol use compared to eScreen or control.
