Mission Reconnect

Description:

Mission Reconnect is a mind and body therapy program for veterans and their partners aiming to help with physical, mental and relationship health. The techniques delivered are based on mindfulness-based and massage therapies, positive emotions and caregiver education. The program is designed for self-directed use to complement or enhance formal clinical care. There are 11 activities grouped under three broad categories – connecting with yourself, connecting with quiet and connecting with your partner. Content includes audio-visual material and written text as well as access to supporting materials such as a booklet containing instruction on massage therapy and a ‘What If’ feature for the user to seek advice on how to apply techniques learnt in challenging situations.  Video content is drawn from two workshops held with veterans and their partners with expert commentary from a former military physician. Videos are 30 to 60 minutes in length. The 9 audio exercises range from 1 to 22 minutes in length which users can listen to and learn from, after which they may wish to use the techniques without guided help.

Outcome Summary:

One Randomized Controlled Trial (RCT) and one pilot study have evaluated the effectiveness of the program. The pilot study tested an initial version of the program in 43 veteran-partner couples in the United States and found that it was successful at improving PTSD and depression symptoms. Following this, a larger RCT was held in which 160 veteran-partner couples were recruited from 4 regions in the United States. Each couple was randomized into one of four study arms - Mission Reconnect alone, Mission Reconnect plus the Prevention and Relationship Enhancement Program (PREP), PREP alone or to a waitlist control. Results at 8 and 16 weeks of treatment show significant improvements in terms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), depression, sleep quality, perceived stress and resilience for participants assigned to Mission Reconnect.
